Late Summer, Slowly Turning to Fall

The last weeks of summer have a beauty all their own. Zinnias are still spilling color across the garden, the days remain warm, and yet the evenings are beginning to hint at the season ahead. This is the perfect time to enjoy what summer is still giving us while quietly welcoming a few touches of fall into our homes.

5 Simple Ways to Welcome the Changing Season

Small changes can help your home move gently from the bright days of summer into the cozier season ahead. There’s no need to rush it—enjoy the beauty of both seasons while they overlap.

1. Bring the Garden Indoors

Cut a handful of late-summer zinnias and place them in a pitcher, mason jar, or favorite vase. Their bright color lets summer linger a little longer.

2. Add One Cozy Layer

A lightweight throw over the back of a chair or a soft pillow in a warmer shade is enough to begin changing the feeling of a room.

3. Enjoy Supper Outside
Take advantage of the remaining warm evenings. Even an ordinary weeknight dinner feels special when it is served on the porch or patio.

4. Gather What the Season Is Giving You
Tomatoes, peaches, corn, herbs, and other late-summer favorites won’t be here forever. Build a meal around something fresh while it’s still plentiful.

5. Let Fall Arrive Slowly
There’s no need to put summer away all at once. Keep the flowers, open the windows on cooler mornings, light a candle in the evening, and allow the seasons to overlap for a while.

September from the Kitchen

Harvest Chicken & Herb Orzo Bake

September calls for dinners that still make use of the garden but feel a little cozier at the end of the day. This simple chicken and orzo bake brings fresh tomatoes, herbs, tender chicken, and creamy orzo together in one comforting dish.

Harvest Chicken & Herb Orzo Bake

Serves 6 | Prep: 15 minutes | Bake: about 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1½ cups uncooked orzo
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1½ cups cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil or parsley

Directions

1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Pat the chicken thighs dry and season them with the salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.

2. Brown the chicken. Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, until lightly golden. Transfer the chicken to a plate. It does not need to be cooked through yet.

3. Start the orzo. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the garlic to the skillet and cook for about 30 seconds. Stir in the uncooked orzo and cook for 1 minute, stirring gently.

4. Make it creamy. Pour in the chicken broth and heavy cream. Stir well, scraping up any flavorful browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the cherry tomatoes and bring everything to a gentle simmer.

5. Bake. Return the chicken to the skillet, nestling it into the orzo. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake uncovered for 20–25 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and the chicken reaches 165°F in the thickest part.

6. Finish the dish. Carefully remove the skillet from the oven. Stir the spinach into the hot orzo around the chicken until it wilts. Sprinkle with Parmesan and fresh basil or parsley. Let the dish rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Serve this with warm crusty bread and a simple green salad. If the evening is cool enough, open the windows, set the table, and let September do the decorating.
